Improv Activities

The exercises included below are those Kat has found offer the most value to individuals training and working in business settings. In writing the game descriptions, she has assumed that the reader possesses a certain level of facilitation experience. Her goal was to provide enough material about each activity, so that the trainer understands the flow and applications of each game. In addition to the general rules, She has included suggested tips and debrief questions. Depending on the focus of the training, different questions will apply. For more general tips on facilitating games and simulations, she recommends Interactive Techniques for Instructor-Led Training by Thiagi or his website, www.thiagi.com.

There are often a number of variations included within each exercise description. Some of these are simple modifications, whereas other variations could qualify as separate activities. Kat has grouped the exercises in terms of their learning points and their central techniques. As for the origins of each activity, let's reiterate. Kat has done her best to attribute each game accurately, though the task was made difficult by the oral nature of our art form, and years of cross-pollination among improv organizations. The description are her adaptations and articulations of exercises gleaned from a variety of sources. Her source attributions include the actual inventors of the games in some cases, when she felt she could be relatively sure of them. When Kat was unable to track a game to its beginnings, she references the individuals and organizations that introduced her to it.

Below you will find a PDF of activities that also contains two tables. One of them sorts activities by improv topics, and the other by general organizational development topics. Included on the tables is also information about group size and time needed. These are provided to streamline your search.
